Beau Travail

Why we chose this film

What does it mean to be a man?

For centuries, millennia, patriarchy has imposed a specific image of masculinity.

An image of strength, dominance and power over.

An image that had no space for vulnerability, kindness and empathy.

If we take a look at the main stages of our world, whether it be politics, business or culture, not much has changed.

Where we would expect cooperation, diplomacy and hope, we witness cock fights dominated by egos.

How can we change society for the better, when we have no leaders to look up to.

Leaders who have the courage to be vulnerable, to share their struggles and to display their emotions.

We all have a deep need for connection.

All we want is to be seen for who we really are.

Acceptance of ourselves and others, leaves no space for hatred and fear.

It is the foundation for a better society.

Film Summary

Foreign Legion officer, Galoup, recalls his once glorious life, leading troops in the Gulf of Djibouti. His existence there was happy, strict and regimented, but the arrival of a promising young recruit, Sentain, plants the seeds of jealousy in Galoup's mind. He feels compelled to stop him from coming to the attention of the commandant who he admires, but who ignores him. Ultimately, his jealousy leads to the destruction of both Sentain and himself.
